Why is now the right time for a millage?
Answer: We started this process in 2008 as part of the facilities strategic plan. We decided to delay improvements then because of the economy. Our immediate needs have become urgent now. Proposals 1 and 2 address these needs. We can’t wait any longer!
Why do we need Technology?
Answer: Our current Technology is obsolete. New Technology is imperative to prepare our students for the world we live in today and the future. By 2015, all students will be required to take state assessments on a computer.
Why do we need athletic upgrades?
Answer: Many of our athletic facilities do not meet Code or Americans with Disabilities Act requirements. The current bleachers in the High School gymnasium, the restrooms at the football field and the track surface are examples of these inadequacies.
How is the district going to make our school safer?
Answer: Here at Delton Kellogg, the education and overall safety of our students is top priority. The proposed remodeling of all main entrances for secure access, adding security systems and fire alarm system, and code upgrades will further support our efforts.
Why is the district asking for a millage?
Answer: It is the only way we can upgrade our facilities. Because the state legislature passed Proposal A years ago, a facilities bond issue is the only way to keep our facilities up to par.
Why is now the right time?
Answer (A): We started this process several years ago with strategic planning and decided to delay improvements.
Answer (B): We can’t wait any longer. By 2014-15 all students will be required to take state assessments on the computer.
What is the reason for the Auditorium upgrades? What is included and why?
Answer: We are repairing broken and obsolete equipment so the auditorium can still function at a proper level.
Why do we need a new gym?
Answer: In order to keep up with the many boys and women’s sports and their demands for practice time. We often have teams needing to practice early before school or late in the evening because our gyms are tied up.
Will the new gym be available to the community?
Answer: YES, as stated above, when we can get team practices done by 7:00 p.m. , for example, then our community and youth teams can use our gyms at a reasonable time.
Why do we need the concession upgrades?
Answer (A): The current concession stand has code/safety concerns – it is not efficient or barrier free.
Answer (B): The rest rooms at the football field do not meet the current codes.
Why do we need technology? What is included?
Answer (A): Our technology is obsolete. Current classroom technology is between 5 to 10 years old. New technology is imperative to prepare our students for the world we live in today and the future. By 2014-15, all students will be required to take state assessments on a computer.
Answer (B): It will include infrastructure to make our campus wireless. It will include new technology devices for each student in the middle school and high school, and one device per three students at the elementary. Teachers will receive new devices with appropriate teacher software.
Answer (C): It will also include classroom upgrades including electrical, sound systems, overhead projectors and screens.
Why do we need to buy buses?
Answer: Our bus fleet is getting very old. Buying buses out of the bond will allow the dollars to go into the classroom which would otherwise be used to replace the old buses.
How long is the bond debt?
Answer: 15 years.
Why do we need to replace classroom furnishings?
Answer: Much of the furniture is as old as the buildings. The furniture will need to be replaced to support the new technology and the new way of teaching and learning.
As we make improvements are we considering energy efficiency and Green?
Answer (A): Yes, the proposal includes new energy efficient boilers for each building, which will save operational dollars that we can use for educational purposes. It also includes a new roof for part of the elementary building and new windows and doors as appropriate.
Why are we moving the playground?
Answer: We are relocating from the corner of the state highway to a central location with safer equipment.
Do we really need a new track?
Answer: We have been refilling cracks for 5 years and if we want to continue to hold home meets we need to properly fix the track.
Didn’t we already make mechanical system upgrades?
Answer: In the last bond issue, we made many improvements in the mechanical system but we did not replace the boilers. These energy efficient boilers will save the district operational dollars immediately.
Why is it important for me when I don’t have kids in school?
Answer (A): Home Values
Answer (B): Our kids are our community
Answer (C): Without the schools our community will not be able to support the businesses in this community and we would have to go elsewhere for services.
What impact does this bond issue have on me as a small business owner?
Answer: When construction workers come to the community to work on the school they will be eating in our restaurants, shopping in our stores and buying our gas. They will be spending money in this community and that will benefit many in the community.
Good schools will attract more families and that brings more people willing to live and work in our community and they in turn will rely on our local businesses to support their households.
What impact does this bond issue have if I have a second home in the district?
Answer: Your second home will be taxed as a non-homestead resident just like it always has been. Consult your tax advisor for how this will impact you.
Those that have non-homesteads in the district, and not a primary home in the district will not be able to vote on the school election.
Good schools attract more home buyers to the area. It will keep your property values strong.
